Postmortem of Drowning : Important points (Basics of postmortem is already discussed on this page in separate post) I was asked to tell what are special consideration if a postmortem of drowned body is to be conducted. Especially if it is semi decomposed. Let discuss special points of a drowned body which is not decomposed first. Our concern is whether drowning is antemortem or postmortem. The special sample which has to b sent is any long bone in formaline.Sternum is preffered .It is to detect diatoms in marrow which is special feature of drowning. Multiple small sections from different lobes of lungs are also important histologically. so send then in formaline as wel For a semi decomposed body its useless to send any decomposed tissue . Send long bones in anycase .try sending intact bone which are not fractured . Exhumation

Exhumation (Postmortem): This is digging of grave after court orders to do a postmortem on it. 1.   Police brings the court orders. This can only b done after court orders. 2.   Check if any postmortem or MLC is performed on that body previously. The same doctor who has performed an MLC or postmortem on that body cannot do Exhumation. It must b a different one for exhumation. 3.   Exhumation is done under doctors supervision .while digging the grave the police and doctors must b present. Postmortem basics

The difference between MLC and Postmortem is that a postmortem is done after the FIR is registered.Which means that it almost always brought to court and u will b called as witness to cross examine. But MLC is not a registered FIR so 90% oF mlc never see a court. An MO perform Postmortem on male body and a WMO performs Postmortem on female body. That is new law.Never agree to do postmortem on opposite gender. Now lets review the procedure here. 1.   Police always bring a body to hospital. The new doctors do not know that the body is in custody of police the whole time.No permission of relatives or attendants are required to do a postmortem. So if the relatives are refusing you to perform the postmortem or not...
