*SMO is BS-18. Posting a MO BS-17 on SMO seat does not make u a SMO
There is a lot of confusion regarding SMO and his duties among new doctors , especially at RHC. We have received many calls and txts regarding what the SMO is suppose to do and what falls under his duties.
An SMO is like SHO (Senior house officer) in ward 
. His duties are exactly the same as an MO just like as SHO is just an HO with an "S" 
. Which means being a senior does not change any of his duties.
In medical field the duties are according to your degree seniority.Not because of time .
MO ,SMO or APMO are same things with only difference of "old" age. Their duties are the same. But out of respect in a DHQ MS usually spare APMOs the trouble of doing emergencies because of their older age and long service.But this is on MS personal behalf with no legal binding.
An SMO working in a RHC has same duties as MO. He has to perform medical duties just like MO and in addition he has to run the hospital just like an MO does in BHU.
So if a SMO is saying that he is to do only OPD because he is SMO and an incharge then he is taking advantage of your ignorance.He has to do ERs , MLCs etc and follow roster as an MO do.
Duty difference are present among MO, SR , AP , Associate and Prof. And that is because of teaching cadre.
So if SMO try to crush you by saying he is now PM of RHC ( ) then simply tell him you will not do emergencies or MLC alone .Do not give anything in written. He will also not give u any order in written for fear of being challenged in court of law or in an inquiry.Its his job to b there at RHC all the time even if MO is not there

PS: An MS is exempted from normal roster and is for admin only and that is because of his additional MPH qualification
